Davies: “Nation of Sanctuary causing housing shortage”

South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has warned Senedd ministers’ Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers is causing housing shortages in Wales.

In a written statement, the Cabinet Secretary for Housing, Jayne Bryant, confirmed there is currently an unmet existing need of 9,400 units.

Estimates of unmet need have increased by 64% since 2019, the year the Nation of Sanctuary policy was introduced.

Mr Davies warned the policy was a pull factor, encouraging more people to enter the country illegally.

He said it is, therefore, exacerbating pressures on housing stock.

Mr Davies said:

Uncontrolled mass migration is placing huge pressures on our housing stock.

This leads to inappropriate developments in our communities, such as at the Eagleswell School site in Llantwit Major.

Plaid Cymru separatist and Labour’s Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers must be scrapped.
