Conservative Senedd member for Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan Andrew RT Davies has demanded robust action to remove an illegal gypsy site at Litchard playing fields.
Mr Davies warned the camp poses considerable safety risks for residents, and said constituents living near the site had contacted him to express deep concerns.
He demanded its immediate removal.
He said any impediments that prevent authorities taking the robust action required must go.
He pointed to previous laws passed to stop illegal encampments that were overturned after being found to contravene the European Convention on Human Rights.
Mr Davies said Britain’s ECHR membership is preventing authorities from protecting our communities. He reiterated his calls to leave the Convention.
Mr Davies said:
“The illegal gypsy encampment at Litchard playing fields poses considerable dangers to the community.
“It must be removed urgently.
“The rights of those who break our laws must never trump those of the law abiding majority.
“But the European Convention on Human Rights consistently blocks legislation to stop these illegal camps.
“To protect our communities, we must leave the ECHR.”
