DAVIES: “Wales Covid inquiry must have full statutory powers”

Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has warned Plaid Cymru ministers against watering down plans for a Wales-specific Covid inquiry.

Plaid’s terminology regarding an inquiry has changed in recent months, instead referring to it as a “review”.

Mr Davies tabled a question to Health Minister Mabon ap Gwynfor, requesting confirmation if it will be regulated under the Inquiries Act 2005.

This would grant the inquiry powers to compel evidence and witnesses.

Ap Gwynfor failed to provide these assurances, instead stating, “we will be updating the Senedd on the Covid-19 review in due course.”

Mr Davies said:

“A serious lack of accountability exists within the devolved administrations.

“The Covid-19 response in Wales was exclusively the responsibility of Senedd ministers, yet they’ve continually refused to hold an inquiry.

“A mere review will be insufficient – Plaid Cymru separatists must hold an inquiry with full statutory powers.”
