Conservative Senedd member for Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan Andrew RT Davies has warned residents’ concerns about plans to build 1,000 homes at Porthcawl waterfront must not be ignored.
Concerns have been raised about pressures on infrastructure and impacts on tourism.
One resident said the proposal constitutes “too much change”, a comment with which Mr Davies agreed.
He warned imposing so many new houses would “fundamentally alter the town’s character”, impacting its cultural fabric.
He backed the Porthcawl Save Our Seaside campaign, which has criticised the plans as “housing-led regeneration and not a seaside regeneration”.
The Labour-run Bridgend Council has defended the scheme on the grounds that new houses are needed due to the area having one of the fastest growing populations in Wales.
But Mr Davies said increasing housing supply would not address the root cause of unsustainable population growth.
He instead called for uncontrolled mass migration to end.
Mr Davies said:
“Plans to build 1,000 new houses in Porthcawl are excessive and will damage the town’s cultural fabric.
“One resident described the project as ‘too much change’, and she’s right.
“Overdevelopment is not the answer to solving the housing crisis, we must address its root cause – uncontrolled mass migration has to end.”
