Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has said Government plans to reopen refugee resettlement schemes are “irresponsible”.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood plans to reopen “safe and legal routes” to the United Kingdom to groups including Afghan and Palestinian refugees.

Mr Davies warned an Afghan national resettled in the Vale of Glamorgan under a previous scheme went on to commit a sex offence.

He said the safeguards surrounding the schemes are “insufficient” and that the Government should not be reopening them.

Mr Davies said:

“An Afghan national resettled in the Vale of Glamorgan under a previous scheme went on to commit a sex offence.

“The safeguards surrounding resettlement programmes are clearly insufficient.

“The Government should not be reopening them.”
