DAVIES: “Kemi right to say devolution has not helped Welsh pupils”

Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has said Kemi Badenoch is right to say devolution has not helped children in Wales when it comes to their education.

Under the control of Senedd ministers, education standards in Wales have consistently lagged behind England.

In international PISA rankings, Wales not only scores well below England in reading, maths and science, it also ranks below the OECD average.

Badenoch referred to the results in “The Right Way”, a document setting out her guiding principles released ahead of this year’s Conservative Party Conference.

She said: “If devolving education was itself a route to better education, we should have seen that in the results. We haven’t.”

Mr Davies said:

“Under the control of Senedd ministers, Welsh pupils’ attainment in reading, maths and science has consistently lagged behind England.

“Children only get one chance at an education and the causes of this must not be ignored.

“The results show devolution has not helped Welsh pupils’ education – and Kemi is absolutely right to say so.”
