Davies: “Heating oil support required for rural residents”

South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has called on the Government to ensure rural communities are protected after shock heating oil price rises.

Many household gas and energy bills are protected by a price cap set by energy regulator Ofgem.

But this protection does not apply to heating oil.

Mr Davies, who chairs the Senedd’s Economy, Trade and Rural Affairs Committee, said that many of his constituents in the Vale of Glamorgan had reported “astronomical price increases” in recent days.

Mr Davies warned that residents of rural communities, whose homes are often off grid, risk being plunged into fuel poverty if support mechanisms are not created.

Mr Davies said:

Many of my constituents in the rural Vale use heating oil as their properties are located off grid.

They face astronomical price hikes following global instability, yet do not have the protection the price cap offers to other households.

The Government must develop a support mechanism to prevent rural residents being plunged into fuel poverty.
