Terrific morning out speaking to residents in Llantwit Major. There are a number of issues of concern locally. Among them is the Vale Council’s decision to remove litter bins.
We decided to put together a short survey asking residents their views. They were all too willing to answer. Many dog owners complained about the removal of the bin on Stallcourt Avenue, which they’d used previously. The Council needs to reinstate previous capacity.
We also included questions on Senedd issues. Plaid Cymru separatist and Labour plans for 36 more Senedd members and a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers were among them. The questions were simple: do residents want the policies to continue or should they be scrapped?
Here comes the most striking bit. Even among those people who were thinking of voting Plaid or Labour, many were adamant the policies should go. This doesn’t mean they all turned around and told me they were now planning on voting Conservative. That would not be true. But it did make them less sure. Many are now reconsidering.
That’s the beauty of getting out and speaking to people. Not only do you get to benefit from interesting conversations. You also see how different the public sees the world to those caught up in a political bubble.
If more politicians did it, Britain would be a better place.
