Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has backed a petition opposing plans to build 51 houses on green fields in St Athan.
The site, at Clive Road, is enjoyed by many residents.
The petition describes the land as “home to various fauna and flora” and points out it “serves as a cherished communal space for families, children and dog walkers alike”.
It warns it forms “part of the social and ecological fabric of our community”.
Mr Davies called on the Vale of Glamorgan Council to drop the “inappropriate” plans.
He said it was “hypocritical” for the Authority to declare a “nature emergency” while pursuing the destruction of the local countryside.
Mr Davies said:
“The green fields at Clive Road are so important for St Athan residents – they must be protected, not destroyed.
“The Council’s plans to concrete over the site, while at the same time declaring a nature emergency, shows the whole thing was little more than virtue signalling.
“Residents are right to launch a petition opposing the plans and I’m pleased to give it my support.”
