Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has called for a full and comprehensive investigation into the Welsh Gender Service.

Gender affirming surgery has been paused in Wales, owing to its unusually large number of referrals.

Nearly four times as many referrals are made in Wales than England, with an independent clinical review set to be carried out.

Mr Davies criticised a statement by Plaid Cymru Senedd member Matthew Jones, that called for the pause to be lifted “as soon as possible”.

The statement also said, “so what if Welsh gender affirming care referrals are higher than the rest of the UK”.

Mr Davies said:

“It is alarming to see the number of people referred for gender surgery in Wales is so much higher than in England.

“Plaid Cymru separatists’ response, in which they’ve downplayed the disparity and called for the pause to be lifted as soon as possible, is concerning.

“It raises questions about the prevalence of radical gender ideology within the Welsh NHS – a full and comprehensive investigation is needed.”
