DAVIES: “Farmers need support with fertiliser costs”

Welsh Conservative Shadow Farming Minister Andrew RT Davies has warned farmers need more support to cope with rising fertiliser costs.

Conflict in the Middle East and global shipping disruptions have driven up the price and affected supply chains.

Following the impacts of this summer’s drought on yields, farmers are reluctant to order fertiliser supplies too early.

However, the NFU have warned that a late surge in orders could leave supply chains unable to cope.

Mr Davies said a government backed interest free loan would prove crucial in preventing this.

Mr Davies said:

“It has been a tough summer for farmers, with the drought and rising costs creating further financial pressures.

“We must ease supply chain problems by ensuring farmers can place orders early.

“A government backed interest free loan for fertiliser costs will be crucial – those in power must bring forward a scheme.”
