DAVIES: “Blaming Brexit for M4 chaos gaslighting the public”

Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has said Labour’s attempts to blame Brexit for its decision to cancel the M4 Relief Road are “gaslighting the public”.

Mark Drakeford’s administration scrapped the project in 2019, despite the then Conservative Government pledging to fund it in full.

Labour Senedd leader Ken Skates announced this week that party’s position has changed, and it now backs an M4 Relief Road.

Explaining the new policy, Skates said “it’s world away from where we were in 2019” and claimed that “Brexit was causing enormous concern at the time”.

Mr Davies welcomed Labour’s new support for building the road but told the party to be honest about the reasons.

He explained Mark Drakeford led a separatist faction within Welsh Labour, that did not want to build the road because it would strengthen economic ties with the South West of England.

Mr Davies said:

“It’s extremely dishonest for Labour to blame Brexit for its decision to cancel the M4 Relief Road.

“The then Conservative Government put all the money on the table, but separatist Senedd ministers feared the road would strengthen economic ties with England.

“If Labour’s new policy represents a rejection of separatism and a move towards an overtly and unashamed pro-British position, then that is something I very much welcome.”
