DAVIES: “Vale school funding crisis the fault of Senedd ministers, not headteachers”

South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has condemned the Vale of Glamorgan Council after it blamed headteachers for a school funding crisis in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Council has issued legal warnings to seven headteachers, and is hauling them before a panel to explain their financial plans.

Mr Davies said years of underfunding by Senedd ministers had left Vale schools facing a shortfall.

He pointed out the Vale’s budget from Welsh Government is determined by a series of indicator based assessments, which have consistently allocated an insufficient amount to education.

He said this had placed significant financial pressures on schools.

Mr Davies pointed to several wasteful projects Senedd ministers have funded, which have taken money away from education.

He cited 36 more Senedd members, the Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers and Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan as projects that had cost hundreds of millions of pounds.

He called on the Council to demand fair funding, rather than blame headteachers for “playing a bad hand as best they could”.

Mr Davies said:

“It’s unacceptable to blame Vale headteachers for a funding crisis, when their schools have been constantly underfunded by Senedd ministers.

“Plaid Cymru separatist and Labour Senedd members have wasted hundreds of millions on 36 more Senedd members, a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers and an Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan.

“Instead of attacking headteachers, the Council should demand the fair funding the Vale deserves.”
