DAVIES: “Senedd ministers must collect corridor care data”

Andrew RT Davies

South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has demanded Senedd ministers collect data on corridor care in hospitals in Wales.

Speaking in the Senedd, Mr Davies asked Health Minister Jeremy Miles to confirm if the data is collected.

He also asked how many patients are being cared for in corridors in hospitals.

In response, Mr Miles confirmed the data is not currently available. He said ministers are “trialling approaches” which will put them in a position to provide routine publication.

Mr Davies spoke of several Vale constituents who’d faced unacceptable experiences in local hospitals.

He warned local NHS services were starved of resources after funding Plaid Cymru separatist and Labour’s plans for 36 more Senedd members and a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers was prioritised.

He said it was vital the data was available to properly hold ministers to account.

Mr Davies said:

“I’m frequently contacted by Vale constituents reporting unacceptable experiences in local hospitals.

“This is not the fault of NHS staff – but hospitals are underfunded thanks to resources instead going towards Plaid Cymru separatist and Labour plans for 36 more Senedd members and a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers.

“We must end corridor care – and it’s vital this data is made available to hold Senedd ministers to account.”

Cabinet Secretary, can you confirm that the Welsh Government collects data on corridor care within Welsh hospitals, and if the Welsh Government does collect that data, how many today are being cared for in a corridor across hospitals in Wales?

Jeremy Miles

On the first point, he’ll be aware that in previous discussions in the Chamber I’ve said that we will be using the winter sprint to be able to develop a way of recording corridor care, as we describe it, so that it then could be published. We have been trialling approaches, which is what’s enabled me to say that I’ve been able to see a reducing trend in parts of the last few weeks. Having got that for the first sprint, we’ll be testing that in the second sprint, and then we’ll be in a position to make routine publication of that. But I’m happy to share with him the information that I have available to me.
