DAVIES: “Migrant resettlement putting huge pressures on Vale housing stock”

Andrew RT Davies

South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has warned migrant resettlement in the Vale of Glamorgan is placing huge pressures on local housing stock.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Draft Deposit Local Development Plan states there are significant pressures on temporary housing stock for reasons including the “Council’s duties and commitments in respect of resettlement programmes.”

It goes on to state that “the need for sufficient permanent affordable housing to assist in moving people out of temporary accommodation is critical and the planning system has a vital role in assisting in new affordable housing delivery.”

Plaid Cymru separatist, Labour and independent councillors voted to designate the Vale a County of Sanctuary for asylum seekers.

Mr Davies warned this is a pull factor, placing further pressures on housing stock.

He said it is leading to overdevelopment, with many inappropriate sites designated in the Replacement Local Development Plan.

These include land in St Athan, Rhoose and at Weycock Cross, Barry.

Vale Conservative councillors strongly oppose the County of Sanctuary policy and have pledged to scrap it.

Mr Davies said:

“The Vale of Glamorgan Council has admitted resettlement is placing huge pressures on local housing stock, leading to overdevelopment.

“But instead of addressing the problem, Plaid Cymru separatist and Labour councillors are making it worse.

“Plaid and Labour’s County of Sanctuary must be scrapped.”
