DAVIES: “Senedd ministers’ Vale rail neglect”

South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has slammed Senedd ministers’ failure to confirm when Rhoose and Llantwit Major will see two trains an hour.

Speaking in the Senedd, Mr Davies asked First Minister Eluned Morgan to confirm when the Vale could expect to see the service, which was pledged as part of the South Wales Metro scheme.

The last Conservative Government provided funding for the Metro through its Cardiff City Deal. But Senedd ministers have failed to deliver this Vale element of the project.

Ms Morgan failed to provide an update in response.

Mr Davies said the failure was the result of Senedd ministers’ neglect, pointing to other projects that have been prioritised.

He said time and money Plaid Cymru separatists and Labour spent creating 36 more Senedd members and making Wales a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers diverted resources away from rail infrastructure in the Vale.

Mr Davies said:

“Rhoose and Llantwit Major were promised two trains an hour as part of the Metro, but this is yet to come to fruition.

“When I challenged Senedd ministers on this, they failed to confirm when residents can expect to receive the service.

“When Plaid Cymru separatists and Labour prioritised 36 more Senedd members and a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers, they took resources away from rail improvements the Vale desperately needs.”

I see that the First Minister has been slightly ungracious in not thanking the Conservative Government in Westminster for bringing forward the city deal that actually enabled the metro system to come into being. I mean, I’ve heard her say twice now that Welsh Labour have delivered this project. It was the city deal combining the moneys of the UK Government with the Welsh Government that delivered the metro scheme, yet in the Vale of Glamorgan we are still waiting on the pledge for two trains an hour to come onto the Vale line as an improvement for the metro scheme in the Vale of Glamorgan. So, when in the Vale of Glamorgan will we see those two trains an hour that other areas of the metro are seeing, and will you pay a full compliment to the former UK Government for its money that it has put into this scheme?

Eluned Morgan

No, I won’t. I’m not going to pay a compliment to them because actually they have short-changed Wales over 14 years. One per cent—1 per cent—of rail funding we get in Wales. It’s not good enough. It’s not acceptable. It’s not acceptable from the Tory UK Government, and it is not acceptable, frankly, from the Labour Government either. We will keep pushing to make sure we get our fair share of funding when it comes to rail in Wales. What we have seen is a 90 per cent improvement. When it comes to a situation of reliability, 90 per cent of Transport for Wales services on the core Valley lines arrived within three minutes of their scheduled time. That makes us in the core Valley area the best performing rail network for punctuality in Great Britain.
