Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has expressed concern at Welsh Government owned Cardiff Airport’s failure to secure the return of Qatar Airways.
The Airport today confirmed it welcomed over a million passengers in the past year, which Mr Davies described as “encouraging news”.
But he warned the absence of Qatar Airways flights in the Airport’s listed next steps suggested the airline’s return was “looking less and less likely”.
The service to Doha was suspended at the start of the Covid 19 pandemic.
While it has returned to every other airport in Britain, Cardiff continues to miss out.
Mr Davies said:
“It’s promising and encouraging to see Cardiff Airport attracted over a million passengers last year.
“But it’s concerning that the Airport hasn’t listed the return of Qatar Airways as part of its next steps.
“Qatar have resumed flights at every other British Airport other than Welsh Government owned Cardiff – if it’s to become profitable it needs to attract carriers of this profile.”
