Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has called for a Stephen Lawrence style inquiry to root out institutional failings that led to the treatment of murdered student Henry Nowak.
Mr Davies said police officers’ decision to handcuff Nowak as he bled to death would “appal decent people across the country”.
Nowak had been stabbed by Vickram Digwa, who falsely alleged he’d experienced racial abuse.
Mr Davies said a “culture of anti-racism” had caused serious institutional failings within the police, in which white people face unacceptable discrimination and are treated with suspicion.
He warned it was important to root out this culture, rather than to attribute all blame to the officers involved.
Mr Davies said:
“The appalling footage in which Henry Nowak was handcuffed as he bled to death has shocked many people, but attributing all blame to the officers involved would be a mistake.
“Henry Nowak’s treatment was the result of a culture of anti-racism under which white people face discrimination and are treated with suspicion.
“We need a Stephen Lawrence style inquiry to root out these cultural and structural failings within our institutions.”
