DAVIES: “Welsh farmers need change quickly”

Welsh Conservative Shadow Farming Minister Andrew RT Davies has vowed to defend the interests of Welsh agriculture, following a productive meeting with farming unions.

Mr Davies discussed the industry’s main concerns with NFU Wales President Abi Reader and Deputy President Paul Williams, in their first meeting following Mr Davies’ appointment to the role.

Mr Davies has a long history working with Abi, whose own farm is based in Wenvoe in his Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend constituency.

He said it was vital reforms to subsidy schemes come quickly, and vowed to hold ministers to account.

He also warned work to change water pollution regulations must begin now, to ensure they’re in place in time for winter.

Mr Davies vowed to push for “pragmatism over ideology”, to ensure farmers are equipped with the tools to feed the nation.

Mr Davies said:

“It was a pleasure to meet with Abi and Paul and discuss the main issues facing Welsh agriculture.

“Existing subsidy schemes and water pollution regulations are not working, and we need change now.

“We must prioritise pragmatism over ideology to help Welsh farmers feed the nation. We all know that no farmers means no food.”
