Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has told Plaid Cymru ministers they must accept responsibility for declining education standards in Wales.
The latest Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scores showed Wales has fallen further behind other parts of Britain.
Wales is the also the only part of the UK that sits behind the OECD average.
Mr Davies described the “unacceptable” scores “the result of years of doing things differently to England for the sake of it”.
He said Plaid had always supported this strategy and pushed Labour for more and more differentiation.
He told ministers the poor results were “their legacy” and they could not simply blame their Labour predecessors.
Mr Davies said:
“It’s completely unacceptable education standards in Wales have fallen further behind the result of Britain.
“This is the result of Senedd ministers’ decision to take a different approach to England for separatist reasons.
“Plaid Cymru separatists may not have been in power when these results were recorded, but given this is a legacy of an approach they pushed for and endorsed, they must take responsibility.”
