Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has labelled the majority of his colleagues “out of touch”, after they voted against scrapping the controversial Nation of Sanctuary policy.
Mr Davies, who voted to scrap the scheme, described it as a “pull factor” which encourages more people to enter the country illegally.
Asylum seekers’ entitlements to access welfare, housing and public services are widely advertised.
The legal fees of people fighting deportation proceedings are also paid.
A poll earlier this year found people in Wales want the Nation of Sanctuary scrapped.
The Senedd voted to keep the programme by 52 votes to 38.
Mr Davies said:
“The majority of people in Wales rightly want the Nation of Sanctuary policy scrapped.
“It’s a pull factor that encourages more people to come to the country illegally.
“But most Senedd members voted to keep the Nation of Sanctuary – which shows how out of touch they are.”
