I voted to scrap Plaid Cymru separatists’ Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers on Wednesday.
But sadly, the Senedd voted to keep it by 52 votes to 38.
I’ve long warned of the dangers of this policy.
It’s a pull factor, that encourages more people to enter our country illegally.
It effectively puts a neon sign above Wales, telling illegal migrants they’re welcome here.
It’s so irresponsible.
Just this week, news emerged of asylum seekers being housed in £250,000 newbuilds.
Meanwhile, a people smuggler convicted in France is living in our country and seeking asylum here.
Illegal migration puts pressures on our public services and makes our streets less safe.
All laws that prevent us tackling it must be changed.
And any policies that exacerbate the problem, like the Nation of Sanctuary, have to go.
Polls show the people of Wales want the Nation of Sanctuary scrapped.
While I voted to do so, most Senedd members didn’t.
This shows how out of touch they are.
