DAVIES: “Minimum alcohol pricing hurting Welsh businesses”

Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has warned minimum unit alcohol pricing is hurting Welsh businesses, with substantially cheaper products in England encouraging shoppers to head across the border.

Mr Davies pointed to a box of Strongbow Cider, which sold for £23.17 in Tesco stores in Wales but cost only £13.95 at the same retailer in England.

He said the higher price is both increasing cost of living pressures and putting businesses in Wales at a disadvantage.

He told Plaid Cymru ministers to drop the policy and operate the same rules as in England.

Mr Davies said:

“The same product is nearly double the price in Wales compared to England, showing the folly of this policy.

“Not only is it adding to cost of living pressures – it’s also putting Welsh businesses at a disadvantage.

“The policy should be dropped – we are one nation and the same rules should apply UK wide.”
