South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has condemned the Government’s refusal to release crime data regarding Afghan resettlement in the Vale of Glamorgan.
Responding to a Freedom of Information request by Mr Davies’ office, the Home Office claimed it would be too costly to release the data.
Officials argued that providing the information would require them to data match “thousands” of records.
Mr Davies asked the Government to confirm if any individuals housed in the Vale of Glamorgan under any Afghan resettlement scheme been either charged or convicted of any sex crimes.
He also requested data on other crimes committed.
Mr Davies warned the Government’s argument would lead people to conclude there had been many incidents.
He said its refusal to be open and transparent would fuel public perceptions of a cover up.
The Conservative MS vowed to appeal the decision and urged the Government to come clean.
Mr Davies said:
“There has been much speculation locally regarding sex crimes involving Afghan resettlement in the Vale of Glamorgan.
“It is both concerning and unacceptable that the Government is refusing to release the data.
“It’s in the interests of public safety to be open and transparent. The Government’s decision to do the opposite will lead residents to ask just what are they trying to hide.”
