Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has welcomed South Wales Police’s decision to “pause” the adoption of an anti-Muslim hostility definition.
Under the proposal, police chiefs had instructed staff to log anything that went beyond what constituted a “legitimate” discussion of Islam.
They were told “legitimate discussion, scrutiny or differing viewpoints” were allowed, with individual officers left to decide what amounted to illegitimate discussion.
Mr Davies said the plans were deeply concerning.
He warned that Islam must not be exempt from scrutiny, and that people are entitled to criticise the religion should they so wish.
He said that a “pause” did not go far enough, and called on the force to rule it introducing the definition permanently.
Mr Davies said:
“While I welcome South Wales Police’s announcement that it is pausing these plans, this does not go far enough.
“Criticism of Islam is not a crime and nor should it be.
“These proposals must be dropped entirely.”
