Welsh Conservative Shadow Farming Minister Andrew RT Davies warned potential job losses at a Merthyr abattoir demonstrates the need for swift action to protect the Welsh meat processing industry.
Kepak has launched a consultation with employees, with reports up to 85 jobs are at risk at its Merthyr plant.
The news follows the closure of Wrexham’s Farmers First Plant.
Several Welsh abattoirs have closed in recent years, which Mr Davies warned had “huge implications” for the wider agricultural sector.
Mr Davies said:
“This news is deeply concerning and my thoughts are with all workers at the plant.
“There are also implications for the wider farming industry, as it could result in a further reduction in meat processing capacity in Wales.
“Plaid Cymru separatist ministers must act to protect the industry.”
