South Wales Central Conservative MS Andrew RT Davies has slammed the 6.5% council tax rise imposed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
The Council had initially proposed a 5.5% increase in its draft budget, before consulting with residents.
Following this consultation, the Council instead decided to go ahead with a 6.5% rise.
Mr Davies said this showed “contempt for residents”, after the overwhelming majority of consultation responses expressed opposition to a higher 6.5% rise.
The Council approved the increase at a meeting last night – despite opposition from Conservative councillors.
All Conservative councillors voted against the rise.
Mr Davies said:
The Vale of Glamorgan Council initially proposed a 5.5% council tax increase.
It then consulted with residents, asking if they would instead be prepared to pay a higher 6.5% increase.
Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming majority opposed a 6.5% rise.
But the Council decided to go ahead and impose it anyway.
This decision will put huge pressures on household budgets, and once again shows we have a council that just does not listen.
