Conservative Senedd member for Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan Andrew RT Davies has condemned authorities’ failure to tackle sewage discharges into the Kenfig River.
Mr Davies met representatives from the Kenfig Nature Trust to discuss serious concerns over pollution.
Residents have reported dead fish floating downstream, and kingfishers deserting their nests.
Mr Davies said authorities must be held to account, and said he would be writing to Dwr Cymru Welsh Water and Natural Resources Wales.
He also described NRW as “unfit for purpose”, repeating his calls for it to be “closed and replaced”.
He warned it is “too large”, and unable to fulfil its regulatory responsibilities properly while also carrying out significant commercial functions.
Mr Davies said:
“Sewage discharges into the Kenfig River are both disgraceful and unacceptable.
“The environmental and public health impacts are severe, and authorities must be held to account.
“Natural Resources Wales – which I’ve long warned is unfit for purpose – is failing in its role as the regulator.
“With regulatory and commercial functions – NRW is incapable of fulfilling its functions properly.
“To finally tackle pollution into our rivers – NRW must be closed and replaced.”
