Conservative Senedd member for the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend Andrew RT Davies has criticised the withdrawal of maternity services by Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board.
A statement on the Health Board’s website confirms:
“Due to significant staffing challenges, we have taken the difficult decision to temporarily suspend our home birth service and midwifery-led births at Tirion Birth Centre. We will review this temporary change after a six-week period.”
Mr Davies has been contacted by constituents who’ve been distressed by sudden changes enforced to their birthing plans.
He said the staffing shortages exposed a “failing system”, given there are currently many trained midwives unable to find jobs.
He told Plaid Cymru ministers to “get a grip” of the situation and work with Health Board bosses to resolve it.
Mr Davies said:
“Staff shortages mean expectant mothers in Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan are being forced to make last minute changes to their birthing plans.
“Yet across Wales, there are trained midwives unable to find jobs.
“The system is not working – Plaid Cymru separatist ministers must get a grip of the situation and work with Health Board bosses to sort it out.”
