Many people don’t know much about Plaid. When they hear the truth, they’re horrified.
We spoke to many in Wenvoe this morning. When we told people Plaid backs creating 36 more Senedd members and making Wales a Nation of Sanctuary for asylum seekers, their attitudes changed in an instant. It was really stark.
The Vale is strongly unionist. Welsh separatism has little appeal here. People are proud to be British. They want close relations with our friends in England. They don’t want to see separatist hate and division.
Most Vale people who know Plaid backs Welsh independence won’t touch them. That includes Labour voters, too. Rhun ap Iorwerth’s admission that a Plaid win would be a roadmap to independence went down like a cup of cold sick. But only among those who’d heard it.
A good way to understand how people are thinking is to ask them to rate their likelihood to vote for each of the parties out of ten. Plaid got plenty of 0s, sure. But they also got lots of 5s. The 5s came from people who just assumed they’re a safe, neutral protest vote. Those who know they’re a radical progressive, separatist party won’t vote Plaid.
The key lesson from the doorsteps is we must spread this message. That’s exactly what we’re doing. As well as knocking doors, we also have thousands of leaflets going out.
