The Senedd must not be put in charge of policing.
Senedd ministers have an appalling track record on law and order.
They want to give prisoners the vote.
But Plaid Cymru separatists have repeated their calls for the power to be devolved, after this week’s announcement the government plans to reform policing.
The Home Secretary has, rightly, rejected these calls. I congratulate her for this.
Not only do believe Senedd ministers will fail to take the tough approach to law and order required.
Devolving policing is also entirely impractical.
The Chief Constable of North Wales Police rightly pointed out her region is very much connected with neighbouring forces in Merseyside and through Cheshire.
She said “our population move is more east to west than it is north to south”.
This is the reality of Wales.
Our respective regions share more links with neighbouring English areas than they do with other parts of Wales.
This is the geographical reality.
But separatists don’t care.
Breaking away from the rest of Britain is more important to them than outcomes. Even if it makes our communities poorer and less safe.
This is why most Welsh people rejected independence decisively in a new poll this week.
But worryingly, many of those who oppose independence say they’ll vote for Plaid Cymru separatists.
It’s because they don’t know this is what Plaid stands for.
We must spread the word.
