DAVIES: “Family businesses like Beales key to Porthcawl’s economy”

Conservative Senedd member for Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan Andrew RT Davies has spoken of the important contribution family businesses make to the area’s economy, as he paid a visit to Beales fish and chip shop in Porthcawl.

Beales has been trading for 80 years, and is now in the hands of the third generation of the family.

Mr Davies visited the restaurant to mark National Fish and Chip Day on Friday 5th June, where he met owners Helen and Nick.

The shop was built in 1930 by Robert Beale senior and his son Arthur.

Arthur opened Beales Park Fish Restaurant at the premises in 1937, cooking on a coal fired range.

Expansion followed over several decades, with an upstairs seating area added in 2018.

Mr Davies said family businesses play an essential role in the local economy, as well as contributing to the culture and heritage of our towns.

He also pointed to his pride at his role in his own family farming business in the Vale of Glamorgan, where he began working on leaving school.

Mr Davies said:

“Family businesses like Beales are important to our local economy. It was a pleasure to visit the restaurant in Porthcawl and meet Helen and Nick – for National Fish and Chip Day no less!

“Now in the capable hands of the third generation, it’s a longstanding Porthcawl institution.

“With a background in my own family business, I know the pressures and hard work involved.

“But it also brings a unique sense of passion and pride, something that was clearly on display from Helen and Nick.

“I’m really grateful to them for an exceptionally warm welcome – I’d urge anyone who fancies fish and chips to pay a visit!”
